Simulation of Virtual Network Embedding Algorithms and Three-Tier Topology for Data Center Networks using VNE-Sim

The recent growing role of Data Center Networks (DCNs) has drawn attention to Virtual Network Embedding
(VNE), a process of interconnecting multiple Virtual Networks (VNs) on a shared physical Substrate Network
(SN). VNE improves network scalability, increases resource utilization and lowers implementation cost in DCNs.
VNE performance depends on selection of both embedding algorithms and DCN topologies. We evaluate exist-
ing Global Resource Capacity (GRC) algorithm as well as recently proposed GRC with Multicommidity Flow
(GRC-M) and Monte Carlo Virtual Embedding with Shortest Path (MaVEn-S) algorithms using three-tier DCN
topology based on acceptance ratio, revenue to cost ratio, and resources utilization. Three-tier DCNs are widely
used for a number of advantages such as simplicity of VN management, shorter downtime, and path redundancy
required for medium to large DCNs. Additionally, partial results from past related works are reproduced for val-
idation purpose. Simulations are performed with VNE-Sim, a tool that allows reproduction of various topologies
of DCNs and Internet Serivce Providers (ISPs) for assessment of VNE algorithms.
